Dr. Ryan McCally & Dr. David Hutcheson completed their surgical training together at the University of Missouri. They have extensive experience in all manner of orthopedic and general surgery, and they have particular experience in minimally invasive orthopedic surgery and total joint replacement. With their long history of working together, they bring a unique and innovative approach to caring for pets. Both Dr. McCally and Dr. Hutcheson will participate in every patient’s surgery. That means each patient has the benefit of having two experienced surgeons’ eyes and hands working together to provide the best possible surgical care. This unique approach is designed to reduce anesthesia time, lessen surgery time, provide better care, and result in fewer complications.
Dr. McCally, DVM DACVS-SA

Dr. McCally is an Arizona native, who grew up in Phoenix. He attended Mountain Pointe High School, where he was an All-State swimmer and baseball player and is now a member of the MPHS Hall of Fame. Dr. McCally attended Stanford University for his undergraduate (B.A. Human Biology, Sports Medicine) and master’s degrees (M.S. Biology), playing in four College World Series while a pitcher on the Stanford baseball team. After college, Dr. McCally played baseball professionally in the Tampa Bay minor league system before attending veterinary school at Washington State University.
Dr. McCally then pursued advanced training with a medicine & surgery internship at the University of Florida and a surgical internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas. He then completed his surgery residency training at the University of Missouri, and he also achieved board certification while serving as a Clinical Instructor at Mizzou.
Dr. McCally has been practicing surgery in Tucson since 2016 and owns Saguaro Veterinary Surgery with his wife, Ashley. He has particular interest in arthroscopy, TPLO, minimally invasive fracture repair, total joint replacement, and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) attenuation. In addition to these areas of interest, Dr. McCally performs a wide variety of orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries. When not caring for Arizona’s pets, Dr. McCally enjoys golf, swimming, triathlon, and watching his two children enjoy their own activities. He and Ashley are excited to share this state-of-the-art surgical center with the community, keeping Tucson at the forefront of small animal surgery.

Dr. Hutcheson, DVM DACVS-SA

Dr. Hutcheson & Dr. McCally completed their residency training together at MU. He is a fantastic surgeon with particular expertise in minimally invasive fracture repair, surgical treatment of osteosarcoma, TPLO surgery, and surgical treatment of lower esophageal dysfunction.
David Hutcheson received his bachelor’s and doctor of veterinary medicine degrees from the University of Georgia. Prior to joining the University of Missouri, he completed a small animal rotating internship at Mississippi State University.

Ashley
Ashley grew up in the California Bay Area. After college Ashley was a course associate in the Human Biology department at Stanford, a bookseller at Kepler’s Books & Magazines in Menlo Park, and a paralegal in the biotechnology patent litigation department at Morrison Foerster. Ashley moved to Pullman, Washington in 2007 to pursue a Masters in Zoology in the lab of Dr. Andrew Storfer. Ashley also owns and operates Lily & Gus, handcrafting unique & lovely plush toys and fabric sculptures for children and adults using repurposed fabrics.
In 2021 Ashley & Ryan started Saguaro Veterinary Surgery and Ashley took on the roll of manager in the practice. Outside of work Ashley loves traveling, reading, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with family.
